The SLC 5/6 and 7/8 travel teams were in Tri-Cities for the Three Rivers Shootout the weekend of April 18th.
The weather was gorgeous, the lacrosse was great and a good time was had by all (especially those who remembered their sunscreen).
The 5/6 team lost its first Saturday game to a tough Monroe program.
The 7/8 team came out on top of Mukilteo North with a 6-4 victory. 5/6 went on to play two more games on Saturday defeating both opponents, Three Rivers and Wenatchee. The second game of the day for 7/8 was against a physical Sandpoint, Idaho team. SLC was down 2-0 at the half and regrouped to get back to 2-1 in the 3rd quarter and then tied the game up with a couple minutes left.
Both the 5/6 and 7/8 teams experienced their first ever “brave heart” in Saturday’s games. A brave heart is lacrosse’s version of an overtime shootout. It’s a 1/1 scrimmage with goalies. It starts with a faceoff and goes until one of the players scores a goal and is the best of 5 with the players changing after each goal is scored.
Sammamish 7/8 scored against Sandpoint on the first 3 goals, each winning the faceoff and racing the length of the field with a defender on their shoulder before scoring. 5/6 had a tougher time going down in its brave-heart against Monroe, 3-2.
The next morning greeted us with hazy sunshine but more warm temperatures. 5/6 came back looking for vengeance against Monroe. With some skillful coaching (including lots of coffee) and determined athleticism, the 5/6 team pulled off a solid win. 7/8 played against the other Mukilteo team and ran into a very hot goalie. The game ended up 4-0 Mukilteo.
Both teams went on to get wins in their last games of the shootout n Sunday. Both games were against young and inexperienced teams. The boys on both teams recognized their skill and experience advantage early and used these games as an opportunity to work on their passing and teamwork. The 7/8 also showed great sportsmanship helping the
Hermiston players who weren’t completely familiar with all the rules such as how to take face-offs and when the attacks were allowed to move to the ball only after possession was declared.
Thanks to the Three Rivers program for hosting a great tournament and everyone on the SLC side who helped it come together. We’re looking
forward to doing this more often!
